John Smart

A brief biography

John was born in Street, where he began studying the violin at the age of six.

After primary school in Street, he won a place on the Music Specialist Course at Wells Cathedral School, where his violin teacher was Patricia Knight. He had regular master classes with Yfrah Neaman and led the school's prestigious Chamber Orchestra for its 1986 World Tour with the Cathedral Choir, taking in the USA, Asia and New Zealand.

He led the chamber orchestra in celebratory concert with Yehudi Menhuin and Yfrah Neaman.

After studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama John went on to work with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in his mother's native Norway. Eminent conductors there included Mstislav Rostropovich, who is internationally acclaimed and acknowledged as the world's greatest living cellist, and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, who is one of the world's leading and most respected conductors, Permanent Conductor of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, and previously Principal Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. John also played under the eminent Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski.

Since then he has worked mainly with chamber orchestras including the City of London Sinfonia, London Concertante, Apollo Chamber Orchestra, and the European Union Chamber Orchestra with which he has visited the Americas, the Caribbean, and Asia.

He devotes several months each year to English Touring Opera, playing all over England and Scotland. The company has recently won five star ratings from The Guardian and other critics.

He is a member of the Iskra String Quartet (a group of professional Christian musicians) who have made their debut album with ICC records, and are making a second album in Feb 2007.

John undertakes educational projects in inner city schools with the Apollo String Quartet. "The kids love it - generally!" he says.

He has recently broadcast with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

When time allows he presents concerts with his pianist and composer sister Kari Smart, and over the past 3 years has performed several concertos, including concerti by Bach and Vivaldi.

Enjoy John playing the Meditation from Thais and The Girl with the Flaxen Hair at a concert in Street Parish Church.
